For a website to be of any use it needs consistent levels of traffic/visitors. There are of course two free ways of obtaining a small level of traffic to your site; 1. Word of Mouth 2. Company Stationary. This wont provide the numbers required though. Some other 'SEO' companies will promise first page listings immediately (which is impossible) but what they really do is setup pay per click adverts for you, which costs more and may be un-necessary if you can achieve good organic results. Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the process of optimising a website; that is making changes to the code
and text to properly convey keywords, phrases and themes to search engines so that you may be
found using those keywords. Typically it can be expected that bonus keywords in addition to your main list will be
ranked, especially with an content rich website.
Getting your site ranked highly in the search engines first of all comes from good content. If a site has good content it will be more easily optimised. Choosing the key words/terms and integrating them sensibly into the content is crucial and an ongoing necessity. Regular checks and updates must be made to check the keywords are relevant and generating traffic. New keywords and search terms are constantly be used and may have to be added into a website's content to keep it ranking highly in the search engines.
Meta Tags might not be the most essential part of SEO these days but it still play a useful part and should be utilised along with keyword rich Title Tags, Page Names and search engine friendly Menus.
Site Submission must be carried out immediately when a new website is launched and/or when new pages are added that may not have been indexed yet. Site Submission is simply informing the search engines of a website's existence. There are literally hundreds of search engines out there!
A text file called robots.txt must be used in the top level directory of a website to allow or deny access by robots to certain pages or subdirectories of the site. Only robots which comply with the Robots Exclusion Standard will read and obey the commands in this file. Robots will read this file on each visit so that pages or areas of sites can be made public or private at any time by changing the content of robots.txt before re-submitting to the search engines.
Another way to insure proper spidering by the search engines is to have a well layed out sitemap. Websites today should have an HTML sitemap which can be navigated to by users and an XML Sitemap which can be used in conjunction with and submitted to various search engines.
A very useful technique to implement would be to use Promotional or Portal Domains. Which are separate sites optimised for certain keywords and phrases. These sites still require good, well written content and act as gateways to the main website.
These are just a few techniques, there are of course other techniques to increase organic search engine placement.
Using online marketing techniques is a tried and tested way of increasing traffic. Click here for details.
